Load Trail vs MAXX-D Utility Trailers: UE8316 vs U3X 83x16
Two 7K tandems: one on the truck, one on the order form
We have sold Load Trail on the Evangeline Thruway for years. MAXX-D is new: we signed on as a MAXX-D dealer in September 2026 and the first units are on the way. There is no MAXX-D on the lot today, so every MAXX-D in this post is a factory order through Ragin, and we will shoot our own photos when the first one lands.
The two trailers are the same class: 83 inches by 16 feet, two 3,500 lb brake axles, a 7,000 lb plate, both built in Lamar County, Texas, outside Paris. Load Trail builds in Sumner; MAXX-D was founded in Sumner and ships from Brookston, a few miles away.
The two trailers
Load Trail UE8316. Load Trail's UE sheet: 2x3x3/16-inch angle frame, crossmembers on 24-inch centers, 3-inch channel tongue, two 3,500 lb Dexter axles with NEV-R-ADJUST electric brakes, ST205/75R15 radials, 2-inch A-frame coupler, 2,000 lb jack, treated wood floor, Sherwin-Williams Powdura powder coat, 7,000 lb GVWR. The one on our September truckload, the Load Trail 83x16 Tandem Axle Utility Trailer 7K, Fold Gate, Black, adds a 2-foot dovetail, a 4-foot spring-assist fold gate, diamond plate fenders, a spare tire mount and a cold-weather harness.
MAXX-D U3X8316. MAXX-D's U3X page: 4-inch channel wrap tongue, 2-inch DEMCO EZ-Latch adjustable coupler, 2K swivel jack, two 3,500 lb brake axles on slipper springs, ST205/75R15 radials, 15-inch front rail with square tube top rails, stake pockets and hooks, diamond plate fenders, 2x8 treated wood floor, flush-mount LEDs, a 1-foot dovetail with a 4-foot spring-assisted mesh gate, powder coat in nine colors, 7,000 lb GVWR, about 1,800 lb empty.
Frame and tongue
MAXX-D's page lists the frame two ways: 2x3x3/16-inch angle in the standard build code F02, and 3x2x1/4-inch in the description. We will read the build sheet on the first unit. Either way it matches or slightly beats Load Trail's 2x3x3/16 angle, and you will not feel the difference at this weight.
The tongue you will. Load Trail runs a 3-inch channel; MAXX-D runs a 4-inch channel that wraps the front of the frame. That is the piece that takes the hit when you drop a loaded trailer off a curb or bounce through the potholes on Kaliste Saloom with a zero-turn strapped down, and it is where the jack and coupler mount.
Gate and dovetail
Both ship with a 4-foot spring-assist gate: Load Trail's in tubing with expanded metal, MAXX-D's in steel mesh. MAXX-D's folds in and lays flat inside the bed for less drag when you run empty, which a lawn crew running Broussard to Carencro will notice at the pump and at a shed with a low door.
The dovetail goes to the Load Trail on our truckload: 2 feet against MAXX-D's standard 1 foot. A longer dovetail means a lower loading angle for a zero-turn, a golf cart or a side-by-side; if you scrape a mower deck every time you load, the extra foot is the fix. MAXX-D also offers a flat deck with no gate or dovetail.
Axles, brakes and tires
Both carry two 3,500 lb axles with electric brakes on both, ST205/75R15 load range C radials and a 7,000 lb plate. Louisiana RS 32:341 requires brakes on a trailer of 3,000 lb or more gross weight, applied from the cab with breakaway; either trailer is legal loaded to its plate, and your truck needs a brake controller for both.
Load Trail names the axle on the sheet: Dexter, with self-adjusting brakes. MAXX-D's U3X page lists 3.5K brake axles without a brand, but MAXX-D announced in April 2025 that it moved its whole line from Lippert to Dexter, so expect Dexter tags; we will read the tag on the first unit. Suspension differs, multi-leaf on the Load Trail and slipper springs on the MAXX-D, and neither is a reason to choose at this weight.
MAXX-D publishes about 1,800 lb empty; Load Trail's estimate tops out at 1,812 lb. Call them equal and plan on roughly 5,000 lb of cargo on either.
Coupler and jack
This is MAXX-D's clearest win. The U3X uses a 2-inch DEMCO EZ-Latch adjustable coupler; Load Trail's UE uses a cast A-frame coupler at a fixed height. If the trailer moves between a lifted Silverado and a stock F-150, an adjustable coupler levels it for each hitch instead of stacking drop hitches, and a level trailer tracks straighter and wears tires evenly. MAXX-D's 2K swivel jack folds out of the way; Load Trail's is a 2,000 lb top-wind.
Sides, fenders, floor and lights
Load Trail: 2x2 square tube rails on angle uprights and four 3/8-inch tie-downs. MAXX-D: a 15-inch front rail, 2-inch square tube top rails, stake pockets and hooks, for sideboards on a mulch run or a hurricane cleanup and more strap points than four corners.
Fenders are diamond plate on both. Floors are treated wood on both, and wood is a wear item on both warranties. Lights are LED on both; MAXX-D's are flush-mount with clear running lights in the sides and rear bumper, which survive a backed-into-the-launch moment at Cypremort Point better than surface-mount. Our Load Trail has a spare tire mount; MAXX-D's spare is an option.
Finish and Acadiana weather
Both are powder coated. Load Trail names the system, Sherwin-Williams Powdura with a OneCure primer and polyester TGIC gloss topcoat, and ours comes black. MAXX-D's utility page says "finished with our durable powder coat" without naming the supplier, and offers wet black plus eight colors from gray metallic to Kawasaki green.
Read the fine print on both. Load Trail gives paint a 2-year pro-rated warranty and excludes road salt, magnesium chloride, sand and weather. MAXX-D lists paint as a wear item and excludes corrosion, rust, UV and saltwater outright. Same result: the powder coat is the protection, not the warranty. Rinse either one after Intracoastal City or Grand Isle.
Warranty: 3-2-2 against 5-2
Load Trail's 232 program is 3 years on the structure, 2 years on every component, and 2 years of roadside reimbursement: towing, tire change, fuel, jump start and lockout, commercial or personal. Send the registration card within 30 days and bring a problem to your dealer within 5 days of finding it.
MAXX-D's 5-2 program covers 2024 and later model years: 5 years on frame rails, tongue and crossmembers, and 2 years bumper-to-bumper on everything else with labor included. The structural coverage is pro-rated, 70 percent of a component in year one sliding to 30 percent in year five, it does not transfer to a second owner, there is no roadside program, and you report a defect to your dealer within 5 days.
A crew running Opelousas to Abbeville every week gets more from roadside reimbursement than from a pro-rated fifth year; someone who keeps one trailer fifteen years gets something from MAXX-D's years four and five that Load Trail does not offer. Either way, we file the claim with the factory for you.
Price positioning
Same price class: each is the entry tandem in its maker's utility line, the U3X under the 10K U4X and 14K U5X. MAXX-D publishes a base MSRP, but what you pay on a factory order depends on options and freight from Brookston, and we will not type a MAXX-D number until we have a landed one. The Load Trail's live price goes on our utility inventory the day it rolls off the truck. Expect the two to land close and choose on the details above. Text 337-279-2620 and we will quote both.
Which one you can get
Load Trail: the Load Trail 72x10 Utility Trailer, Fold Gate, Green is on the lot now for anyone who needs a single-axle today. The 83x16 UE and the Load Trail 77x12 Single Axle Utility Trailer 3.5K, Brakes, Fold Gate, Black are on the September truckload; reserve either on coming soon.
MAXX-D: order yours. The first units are on the way, none are on the lot, and a U3X in your color and options is a factory order placed through us. A factory order on either brand takes weeks, not days, so if you need a trailer before grinding season, we will point you at what is on the truck.
Who each buyer is
You are a Load Trail UE8316 buyer if:
- You need a 7K tandem this month, not this winter.
- You load a zero-turn or a golf cart and want the lower angle of a 2-foot dovetail.
- Roadside reimbursement matters because the trailer works away from home.
- Black is fine.
You are a MAXX-D U3X buyer if:
- The trailer moves between trucks with different hitch heights.
- You want a 4-inch wrap tongue, a tall front rail and stake pockets for sideboards.
- You want a factory color that matches your trucks.
- You can wait on a factory order and want a fifth year of structural coverage.
