Tilt Deck Trailer Guide for Louisiana: Gravity vs Power Tilt
Every week somebody backs onto our lot on the Evangeline Thruway tired of wrestling ramps: a Youngsville dirt crew loading a skid steer six times a day, a Broussard rental yard moving scissor lifts, a Carencro guy whose lowered Camaro scrapes on every ramp. All three want a tilt deck, but "tilt" covers three designs. Here is how to pick one, and what is on this month's truckload.
What a tilt deck does that a ramp trailer cannot
A ramp trailer means setting two steel ramps and stowing them again, every load. A tilt deck pivots (all of it, or the rear section) so the tail drops to the ground; drive up the slope, the deck levels under the load and latches. No ramps to lift, no ramp feet sinking into a soft shoulder after a week of rain (most weeks in South Louisiana), and one continuous surface with no lip, which matters for a scissor lift or a car with a splitter.
Gravity tilt vs power tilt vs stationary-plus-tilt
Load Trail builds all three; the difference is how the deck moves and how much of it moves. We do not stock PJ or Big Tex tilts, so this sticks to what is on our lot.
Gravity tilt (Load Trail TH Tilt-N-Go)
A gravity tilt uses the machine's weight and the trailer's balance point. Release the latch and the empty deck tips tail-down; drive past the pivot and it settles level. A hydraulic cushion cylinder (Load Trail lists a 3 x 10 x 1.25 inch cylinder on the TH) keeps it from slamming. No pump, battery or wiring to maintain, which is why contractors like it. The trade-offs, per Load Trail: less control over angle and timing, an abrupt feel, and very light loads that will not tip the deck on their own.
Power tilt (Load Trail TM Rapid Loader)
A power tilt adds a 12-volt hydraulic pump and battery so the deck rises under power instead of waiting on the load to tip it. Load Trail lists the Rapid Loader's standard hydraulics as gravity/power up: the pump raises the deck and gravity lowers it through a valve; full power up and down is an option (code K02), and so is the wireless remote. Ours has the TUFF remote: run the deck from the machine's seat and get a slow, controlled tilt regardless of load weight, which a scissor lift deserves. The full deck tilts to 13 degrees with no stationary section. The cost is more upkeep (pump, battery, lines, charger) and a higher price than a gravity deck of the same size.
Stationary deck plus tilt (split deck)
On longer trailers Load Trail splits the deck: the rear section tilts, the front stays fixed. The incoming 83x24 Tilt-N-Go is a 16-foot gravity tilt behind an 8-foot stationary deck that carries the bucket, forks or a tool box and puts weight over the tongue. The trade-off: your machine only gets the 16-foot tilting section, so measure it before you assume 24 feet of usable deck.

The two Load Trail tilts on our September truckload
Both are on load 22533H, listed on our coming soon page; a refundable deposit holds either one before it comes off the truck.
Load Trail 83x24 Tilt-N-Go, 14,000 lb GVWR (stock 0765). Two 7,000 lb Dexter torsion axles with electric brakes on both, 16-foot gravity tilt plus 8-foot stationary deck, 16-inch cross-members, 2-5/16 inch adjustable coupler, six 4-inch D-rings, 8-inch channel winch plate. The one for a skid steer or mini excavator that works every day.
Load Trail 83x20 Rapid Loader, 14,000 lb GVWR (stock 5022). Full 20-foot power-up deck with a TUFF wireless remote, two 7,000 lb Dexter spring axles with brakes on both, 6-inch channel frame with I-beam tongue, 16-inch cross-members, treated pine floor, four D-rings, winch plate. The scissor-lift and low-car trailer.
Note that loadtrail.com lists the Rapid Loader only as TM07 (7,000 GVWR) and TM10 (9,990 GVWR); ours was ordered as a 14,000 GVWR build on 7,000 lb axles with the 6-inch frame, which the web catalog does not show, so trust the tag on the tongue and our listing.
What actually rides on a tilt deck, with real weights
Payload is GVWR minus empty weight (on the build sheet; do not guess), and the machine's weight has to include the attachment.
- Skid steers and track loaders. Bobcat lists the S650 at 7,901 lb operating weight and the T650 track loader at 8,980 lb. Add a bucket or forks and you are near 9,500 lb, which is why these belong on a 14K tilt, not a 10K.
- Scissor lifts. Genie lists the GS-1930 at 3,209 lb and 6 feet long; two fit on a 20-foot power tilt with room to strap, and the slow tilt keeps the low frame off the deck edge.
- Low cars. A full deck tilting to 13 degrees is the gentlest approach short of a rollback; with a winch, a non-runner comes on without touching a ramp.
- Compact tractors and mini excavators. Gravity tilt is fine; the machine is heavy enough to settle the deck.
- UTVs, golf carts and mowers. Light enough that the 7K Falcon 83x16 gravity tilt makes more sense than a 14K deck that may need a push to level.
Deck lengths: 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 feet
Load Trail's TH Tilt-N-Go runs 15 to 26 feet in 83-inch or 102-inch widths; the Rapid Loader runs 18 to 22 feet at 83 inches.
- 16 feet. The Falcon 83x16 tandem tilt on our lot: two 3,500 lb axles, brake on one axle, treated wood floor, Bulldog coupler, 1,850 lb empty. Golf carts, side-by-sides, zero-turns, a small car. Falcon's Cushion Tilt spec page still says specs coming soon, so confirm the GVWR tag on the trailer.
- 18 to 20 feet. One skid steer with an attachment, a pair of 19-foot scissor lifts, or a full-size car.
- 20 to 22 feet. Two Diamond C GTF206 tilts are still on the lot, an 83x20 and an 83x22. The 83x22 is listed at 9,890 GVWR, sized for a 6,000 to 7,000 lb machine; our 83x20 listing does not carry a GVWR, so text us for its spec sheet.
- 24 feet with a stationary section. The skid steer rides the 16-foot tilt; the bucket and forks ride the 8-foot fixed deck.
- Wider and heavier. Load Trail's PE Pintle Equipment Tilt: 102 inches wide, 22 to 32 feet, power up and down, 14,000 to 21,000 GVWR, 2-5/16 inch adjustable coupler standard, pintle ring optional. We do not stock it; text us for a built-to-order quote.
Torsion vs spring axles: which one for Louisiana roads
The two incoming Load Trails split on this: torsion under the Tilt-N-Go, springs under the Rapid Loader, both 7,000 lb Dexters with brakes on every wheel.
A torsion axle has rubber cords inside the axle tube instead of leaf springs, shackles and an equalizer, and each wheel moves independently. Dexter's FAQ says the rubber suspension rides smoother with less sway and noise, has "no suspension parts to wear out," and carries a ten-year Torflex warranty versus five years on sprung axles. That matters hauling a lift down I-10, and in our humidity shackles and hangers are one more thing to rust.
The honest downside, also from Dexter: torsion axles are not equalized, so load cannot transfer between axles, and on a triple a driveway lip or railroad crossing can put the whole load on one axle. A tandem is less sensitive, but on rutted lease roads or cane-field turnrows a spring axle's equalizer shares the load, any shop in Acadiana can rebuild it with off-the-shelf parts, and a bent torsion axle is a whole-axle replacement.
Our rule of thumb: pavement, lifts and cars, torsion. Dirt, daily jobsite abuse, cheap repairs, spring.
Brakes, licensing and the truck in front of it
Louisiana law (La. R.S. 32:341) requires brakes with a breakaway system on any trailer of 3,000 lb gross weight or more, and allows brakes on one axle between 3,001 and 5,000 lb. Every tilt on our lot has electric brakes; the 14K Load Trails have them on both axles, so you need a brake controller and a 7-way plug.
Under the federal CDL rule, a combination rated 26,001 lb or more that includes a towed unit over 10,000 lb GVWR is Class A territory. A 14,000 GVWR tilt is over 10,000, so if you haul for pay the deciding number is the combination rating, and that is not the sticker in your door: the door-jamb label is the truck's own GVWR, and the rule uses the greater of the manufacturer's combination rating or truck GVWR plus trailer GVWR. Behind a truck labeled 10,000 lb a 14K tilt is 24,000 combined and under the line; labeled over 12,000 lb, it is over. Our non-CDL gooseneck guide works the same math. Load Trail also lists 7,000 and 9,990 GVWR Rapid Loaders (TM07 and TM10) that stay under the 10,000 lb towed-unit line; we can quote either. A 14K tilt still wants a three-quarter-ton or one-ton truck, not a half-ton.
Warranty and service in Lafayette
Load Trail covers the trailer with a 3-year structural warranty, 2-year comprehensive coverage on every component and 2 years of roadside reimbursement, and we are the dealer, so a claim comes to our service department at 2601 SE Evangeline Thruway, not a phone number in Texas. Falcon's published warranty is shorter: one year on defective material and factory workmanship, 90 days on electrical components, axles, bearings and running gear, with paint and tires excluded. Weigh the difference if the trailer will work every day.
