Load Trail vs. Falcon: Which Louisiana Workhorse Is Right for You?
Load Trail vs. Falcon: Which Louisiana Workhorse Is Right for You?
Two steel-trailer brands sit side by side on our lot at 2601 SE Evangeline Thruway: Load Trail and Falcon. Last month we compared their utility trailers. This is the heavy side of the lot: dump trailers, equipment trailers, tilts and car haulers, the trailers that earn a living. Both brands are built in Texas, a day's haul from Lafayette. We stock both on purpose, because they are built for two different buyers, and the honest answer to "which one" usually comes down to your budget and how many days a week the trailer works.
What is on the lot this week
Start with what is physically on the gravel in October 2026, because a comparison is only useful if you can go stand next to the trailers.
Load Trail. A truckload landed this month: an 83x24 Tilt-N-Go gravity tilt and an 83x20 Rapid Loader power tilt, both 14,000 lb GVWR; an 83x24 triple-axle equipment trailer rated 21,000 lb; two 83x22 car hauler / equipment trailers at 14,000 lb with MAX-Ramps; an 83x20 car hauler at 7,000 lb with slide-in ramps; and a 102x30 Low-Pro gooseneck rated 24,000 lb. A Load Trail dump is a factory order through us.
Falcon. A 16-foot tandem-axle dump trailer at 14,000 lb GVWR with 3-foot sides, the one dump on the ground today; a 102x22 heavy car hauler rated 10,400 lb with drive-over fenders; an 83x20 car hauler at 7,000 lb with slide-in ramps; and an 83x20 Super Duty II utility rated 10,400 lb.
Live prices for every one of them are on our inventory page. Units sell, so check it before you drive over.
Where they come from
Falcon has built trailers in Tyler, Texas since 1987. Load Trail builds in Sumner, outside Paris. Neither is an import, and both factories are close enough that a warranty part or a factory order does not cross an ocean.
Frame and running gear
Load Trail publishes its bones model by model. The 14,000 lb CH car hauler / equipment trailers use a 6-inch channel frame and tongue with 3-inch crossmembers on 16-inch centers. The 21,000 lb triple steps up to an 8-inch frame. The 7,000 lb car hauler is 5-inch channel with crossmembers on 24-inch centers. The Tilt-N-Go rides on an 8-inch I-beam; the Rapid Loader on 6-inch channel with an I-beam tongue.
Load Trail also names its axles: Dexter, with forward self-adjusting electric brakes on every CH, and Dexter torsion axles under the Tilt-N-Go. Falcon's catalog does not name the axle maker, so read the build sheet on the unit you are looking at. That matters in year six when you order a hub or a brake kit.
One Louisiana rule applies to both brands: RS 32:341 requires cab-controlled brakes on any trailer at 3,000 lb gross or more. Every 14,000 lb and 21,000 lb unit here crosses that line empty, and a car on a 7,000 lb hauler puts it well past. Ask which axles carry brakes on the exact unit, and plan on a brake controller in the truck on day one. Not sure what your truck can pull? Run our free towing check before you shop.
Ramps, tilts and how you load
This is the line that decides most equipment buyers.
The Load Trail 14,000 lb and 21,000 lb units on the lot carry MAX-Ramps: a full-width ramp system that folds closed over the dovetail, so there are no loose ramps to pull, drop, line up and chain down after every load. A crew loading a skid steer four times a day feels the difference by lunch. The two tilts go further. The Tilt-N-Go uses the machine's weight and a damping cylinder, with no pump or battery to keep alive; the Rapid Loader tilts the whole 20-foot deck on a wireless remote from the seat of the machine. Our tilt deck guide covers which one fits which load.
Falcon keeps it simple: slide-in ramps on the car haulers, slide ramps on the dump, and drive-over fenders on the 102-inch-wide heavy car hauler so a wider vehicle clears the fenders. For a car that moves twice a month or a mower on weekends, slide-ins are all you need.
Dump trailers: one on the ground, one on order
The Falcon 16-footer is the dump you can hook to this week. Its build sheet lists a 620 ram hoist, 2-way gate, slide ramps, tarp kit, 10,000 lb jacks and a spare. It weighs about 4,800 lb empty, which leaves roughly 9,200 lb of payload inside its 14,000 lb rating: about three yards of wet Vermilion Parish clay in a box that could hold twice that. Axles set the limit for dirt, not side height.
A Load Trail DL 14K is a factory order built to your spec: a 5-inch by 15.75-inch cylinder with a scissor hoist and a 40-degree dump angle, 10-gauge smooth-plate floor, 24-inch sides with 36- or 48-inch sides optional, two 7,000 lb Dexter brake axles, an E-Z Lock tarp, and a corded 2-button remote with wireless on the option sheet. Load Trail publishes empty weights, 4,476 lb on the 83x16, so payload math is easy. Need a dump this week, buy the Falcon. Want the floor gauge and sides spec'd your way and can wait seven to nine weeks, order the Load Trail. Our hoist guide explains the scissor-versus-telescopic choice.
Finish in Acadiana weather
Load Trail's standard finish is Sherwin-Williams Powdura powder coat: a OneCure primer under a polyester TGIC gloss topcoat. Falcon's finish is paint, and Falcon's warranty says paint is not covered. Under a carport with the chips touched up, that is a fair trade for the lower price. Parked in the yard through a South Louisiana summer, with rain most weeks, humidity from May to September and salt air on a run to Cypremort Point, powder coat is the difference between a trailer that still looks like one at year five and a project.
Warranty
Falcon warrants the trailer for one year, ninety days on electrical, axles, bearings and running gear; paint is excluded, and defective parts go back to the factory freight prepaid. Load Trail's 2-3-2 program is three years structural on the main frame, crossmembers, railings and sub-frame, two years on every component, and two years of roadside reimbursement for the trailer and the tow vehicle, personal or business use. It has to be registered within 30 days, and we file it with you. Either way, a claim runs through us, here in Lafayette, not through a call center.

Who should buy which
Buy the Falcon if: the trailer works weekends and the odd weekday, it parks under cover, the purchase price matters more than the ten-year cost, or you need a dump or a 10,400 lb car hauler this week at a price a 14,000 lb Load Trail does not meet.
Buy the Load Trail if: the trailer is a daily tool for a crew, you load machinery often enough that fold-over ramps or a tilt deck pay for themselves, it lives outside in Acadiana weather, you want a named axle brand and a three-year structural warranty, or roadside coverage on the truck and trailer matters on I-10 runs to Houston and US-90 to Morgan City.
Buy neither on the badge alone. Pick the specific unit that matches your heaviest regular load, your truck's ratings and your budget. That is the honest answer, and it is why we keep both lines on the lot.
A note for business buyers before December 31
If the trailer is for your business, the year-end tax clock is the real deadline. Anything on the lot can be in your yard this week. A Load Trail factory order placed now lands before the end of the year; one placed in late November may not. Our Section 179 guide walks through it, and your CPA has the final word.
