Utility Trailers for Sale in Lafayette, LA: Which Size Do You Actually Need?

If you typed "utility trailers for sale Lafayette LA" or "utility trailers near me," here's the straight answer. We've got nine Falcon utility trailers on the ground at 2601 SE Evangeline Thruway this week, from a 5x10 single axle up to an 83x20 Super Duty with electric brakes. Eight utility trailers left this lot in the last 60 days, and four of them were 7x14 tandems. That's the size most people around here end up with. This post is the conversation we'd have with you on the lot, so you know which one fits before you drive over.

What's on the lot this week?

All nine are Falcon, built in Georgia, and all nine have a treated wood floor, a pipe top rail and a Bulldog coupler. Here's the row from smallest to biggest:

  • 5x10 single axle with a ramp gate. The one that fits a riding mower and not much else.
  • Two 77x12 single axles, one black, one smoke charcoal with a gray pinstripe. Spare tire mounted, spring-assist tailgate.
  • 6.5x10 tandem axle with a rear ramp gate and a spare.
  • Two 83x12 tandems, 83-inch overwidth deck, wrap tongue, mounted spare.
  • 83x14 tandem, same build as the 83x12 with two more feet of deck.
  • 7x14 heavy-duty tandem on two 5,200 lb axles, slide-in ramps, all-LED lights.
  • 83x20 Super Duty II tandem on two 5,200 lb axles with an electric brake axle, a 7,000 lb drop-leg jack and 10-ply tires.

Every one of them shows its price at ragintrailers.com/inventory, and the price you see there is the price on the lot. When one sells, it drops off that page the same day.

How do you pick a utility trailer size?

Start with the widest thing you'll haul, not the heaviest. A zero-turn mower with a 60-inch deck needs a 77-inch trailer, and it's tight. A side-by-side needs 83 inches of deck or you'll be folding mirrors. A golf cart fits on anything 10 feet and up.

Then think about length. A 10-foot deck hauls one mower. A 12-foot deck hauls a mower and a push mower and the gas cans. A 14-foot deck is where a lawn crew lives: zero-turn, walk-behind, trimmers on a rack, and room to walk between them. A 20-foot deck is a skid steer, a mini excavator or two side-by-sides for the deer lease in December.

The mistake people make is buying for the one big haul a year instead of the Tuesday haul. If you move a mower every week and a tractor once a year, buy the 14 and rent the big one, or call us about delivery when the tractor moves.

Single axle or tandem?

A single axle is lighter, cheaper and easier to back into a tight driveway. Our 77x12 singles are rated at 3,500 lb gross and weigh very little empty, so a half-ton truck or a mid-size SUV tows one without noticing. That's the mower-and-tools trailer for a homeowner in Youngsville or Broussard.

A tandem gives you two things: more capacity and a flat tire that doesn't end your day. If you blow a tire on a single, you're on the shoulder of I-10. On a tandem, you limp to the next exit. The 83x12 and 83x14 tandems on the lot are rated at 4,500 lb gross. The 7x14 heavy-duty and the 83x20 Super Duty are rated at 10,400 lb gross on 5,200 lb axles, and that's a different class of trailer. That's a small tractor, a pallet of sod, a compact skid steer.

Do you need brakes on a utility trailer in Louisiana?

Louisiana wants brakes on a trailer once the loaded weight goes past 3,000 lb, and a trooper on the Evangeline Thruway will ask. The 83x20 Super Duty on the lot comes with an electric brake axle from the factory. The 7x14 heavy-duty is built to carry the kind of load that needs them. The standard-duty singles and tandems come without brakes, which is fine for a mower and tools under the line. If your loads are heavier than that, tell us before you buy. We'll walk you through what it takes to add a brake axle and a controller in the truck, and we'll give you a straight answer on whether it's worth doing to that trailer or whether you should step up to the Super Duty.

Either way, the trailer leaves here with the lights checked and the coupler sized to your ball. We do that on every unit, every time.

Ramp gate, tailgate or slide-in ramps?

The spring-assist tailgate on the Falcon singles and standard tandems is a 4-foot gate that folds down as a ramp and folds up as a wall. One hand lifts it. That's the right gate for a mower, a four-wheeler or a load of mulch you want to keep on the trailer.

The 7x14 heavy-duty has slide-in ramps instead. They store under the deck, pull out for loading, and leave the back of the trailer open. That's the setup for a tractor with a loader on the front, because the gate on a standard tandem won't take the weight of a loaded bucket.

The 83x20 Super Duty has built-in 4-foot spring-assist ramps for the same reason, with a wider, heavier build behind them.

What truck do you need?

A 77x12 single or a 6.5x10 tandem tows behind almost anything with a 2-inch ball and a 4-flat or 7-way plug. A mid-size pickup, a Tahoe, a Grand Cherokee. The 83x12 and 83x14 tandems want a half-ton; they'll go behind less, but you'll feel it on the Breaux Bridge overpass. The 7x14 heavy-duty and the 83x20 Super Duty want a half-ton at minimum and a three-quarter-ton if you're going to load them to the sticker. The Super Duty takes a 2-5/16 inch ball, not a 2-inch, so check your hitch before you come.

If you're not sure, bring the truck. We'll hook it up on the lot and tell you what it'll handle.

Why Falcon?

We've sold Falcon utility trailers since we opened in 2016 and they're still the brand we put most of our money in. The frame is honest, the Dexter EZ-Lube axles grease from the hub without pulling a wheel, the wood is treated, and they're priced for a working person. We wrote a longer piece comparing them to a heavier brand we also carry at Falcon vs Load Trail utility trailers. The short version: Falcon for mowers, tools and the weekend; the heavier frame when the trailer is the business.

Not sure an open trailer is the right call? Read enclosed vs utility first. If you've got tools that walk off job sites, the answer might be a box with a door, and we have nine of those on the lot too.

Can you finance a utility trailer?

Yes. Financing and rent-to-own are both available on every utility trailer on the lot, and the rent-to-own route works for the smallest single axle as well as the Super Duty. The details are on our financing page. One thing we say up front so nobody's surprised later: deposits are non-refundable. We hold the trailer for you, and we take it off the website, so the deposit is what makes that fair to the next person who wanted it.

Do you deliver?

Within 50 miles of the lot, delivery is free. That covers Lafayette, Broussard, Youngsville, Carencro, Scott, Breaux Bridge, New Iberia, Abbeville, Crowley, Opelousas and most of Acadiana. We deliver to Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and Alexandria too, and we'll quote the fee by the mile. If you'd rather pick it up, we'll hook it up, check every light and send you home with the paperwork done.

If what you need is a trailer with a kitchen in it, that's a different page: our food trailer builder starts from an enclosed shell and builds it out for the health inspector.

Come stand on one

Reading about deck width is one thing. Standing on an 83-inch deck next to a 77-inch deck is another, and the difference is obvious in about five seconds. We're at 2601 SE Evangeline Thruway in Lafayette, Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 12. Call 337.504.3820 and tell us what you haul. We'll tell you which of the nine to look at first.
