A 6x12 single axle is the most popular trailer we sell. It swallows a full contractor setup or a side-by-side and still tows behind a half-ton. Contractors who carry a generator, compressors and racks usually land on a 7x16 tandem with a ramp door. Past 7x16 you want tandem axles with brakes, and by 8.5x20 you are in three-quarter-ton territory. On the lot, look at the floor and wall thickness, the roof (one-piece aluminum beats seams), the ramp door spring rating, LED lights, and whether the frame is steel tube or a lighter channel.

The 6x12 single axle is the workhorse: big enough for a side-by-side or a full tool setup, light enough for a half-ton truck or a full-size SUV. Contractors usually land on a 7x16 tandem, and car haulers and race teams go 8.5x20 or 8.5x24.
Single axle (5x8 through 7x14) is lighter, cheaper and easier to move by hand. Tandem axles add a second set of brakes and a lot more payload, and they track better on the interstate. If the trailer will carry more than about 2,500 lb of cargo, or you plan to run it to Houston and back, go tandem.
A 6x12 single axle loaded weighs around 3,000 lb, which most half-ton trucks and full-size SUVs handle easily. A 7x16 tandem loaded runs 5,000 to 7,000 lb, still half-ton territory with a brake controller. An 8.5x20 car hauler with a car inside pushes 9,000 lb or more and wants a three-quarter-ton. A ramp door is the answer for anything with wheels: side-by-sides, mowers, motorcycles, carts. Barn doors give you a flat rear and a wider opening for pallets and moving furniture, and they are easier to open in a tight spot. Most contractor trailers on our lot come with a ramp door plus a side entry door.
