5 Dump Trailer Maintenance Tips to Avoid Downtime
A dump trailer is a workhorse — treat it right and it'll pay you back for years. Our service department sees the same avoidable issues over and over, so here are five quick habits.
1. Grease the hinges & pivots
A few pumps of grease keeps the hoist and gate moving freely.
2. Check the battery
The onboard battery runs your hydraulic pump. Keep it charged and clean the terminals.
3. Inspect tires & lug nuts
Check pressure and re-torque lugs after the first 50 miles on a new trailer.
4. Keep the bed clean
Rinse out mud and debris so it doesn't rust or jam the gate.
5. Service the brakes
Have your electric brakes checked yearly. Need help? Our service department is here.
Keeping Your Dump Trailer Working
A dump trailer is a hydraulic machine, so a little upkeep prevents expensive downtime:
- Charge the battery regularly; a dead battery is the most common failure. Consider a solar trickle charger if it sits between jobs.
- Check hydraulic fluid and watch for leaks at the cylinder and hoses.
- Grease pivot points and keep the ram clean so grit doesn't score the cylinder.
- Never dump on a slope or unlevel ground — it stresses the frame and can tip a loaded trailer.
- Rinse out corrosive materials (salt, fertilizer, wet concrete) so they don't eat the bed.
Treat it well and a good dump trailer will earn its keep for many years.
